Last week was the celebration of the top predator of the Arctic -- the polar bear. The first official Polar Bear Week ever was a success!
Here's a little background information about polar bears. There are currently approximately 20,000 polar bears in the wild but their numbers are decreasing due to loss of habitat; the sea ice. Sea ice is very important to polar bears because they rely on the arctic sea ice to hunt for ice seals. Since polar bears were recently placed on the threatened species list and they play a huge role in the Arctic food chain, we can all start to take action in our daily lives to ensure these iconic animals' populations do not continue to decrease. Each of us can make changes in our daily lives to help reduce our carbon footprint and stop global climate change.
Here are just a few ideas to get you started:
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Use reusable grocery bags instead of plastic
Carpool or ride your bike
Also, come by the Wild Arctic exhibit at SeaWorld San Diego to see our two female polar bears: Snowflake and Szenja, the ambassadors for all polar bears in the wild.
